Attraction in the Workplace
Most of us have been warned about the dangers of dating in the workplace but in truth, this practice is becoming more and more acceptable and expected. Meeting single people, especially for those who work long, hard hours, is difficult. For this reason, we see a growing trend of dating in the workplace. If done right and with honest expectations, this is possible.
The most important thing about dating someone in the workplace is that the two of you have to have an agreement that work will be work and personal life will be personal. This means behaving responsibly and professional while on the job and then enjoying your fun time outside of the office. The problem is that many people intend to do this but then fail. You also need to consider what happens if the dating relationship should end. Obviously, you would need to maintain a professional relationship, which can be challenging.
Another important consideration regarding workplace dating is the two parties involved. For instance, dating a boss is walking on dangerous grounds. Again, if something were to happen whereby you had to be reprimanded or even terminated, your boss would have to do it. Then, outside the workplace, just imagine the stress such a situation would place on your dating relationship.
Of course, your company’s policy on office dating may dictate what you do and do not do. For instance, if there were a written policy forbidding workplace dating but you and a co-worker got involved anyway, both of you could be at risk for termination. You need to think carefully whether losing your job over this man or woman is worth it. Now, it may be but if your job was the result of a four-year degree, perhaps not.
The benefit to dating someone at wok is that you have convenience. You would be able to see each other more often and you might even have the chance to ride to and from the job together. Working at the same company also, means being able to enjoy lunch together, taking a walk at noon together, and so on. For large corporations or people who work long hours, this convenience is a huge bonus.
If you are interested in someone at work, you first need to have a strategy. This means being honest about potential consequences if the relationship were to end. Then, if you do date someone in the workplace, remember that no one else needs to hear about it, especially your personal love life. What happens behind closed doors between you and your partner should remain there. Finally, make sure you never have any type of public display of affection, even touching the person’s leg or arm. In addition to putting your job at risk, this makes for an uncomfortable environment for others.
